Fuel Efficiency

With the rising cost of gas, it is important to note the Jeep Grand Cherokee receives 19 miles per gallon in city driving, 26 miles per gallon on highways, and 21 miles per gallon combined with rear-wheel drive. With all-wheel drive, these numbers are 18 miles per gallon city/ 25 miles per gallon hwy/ 21 miles per gallon combined. All versions of the SUV use an 8-speed automatic transmission and start with a 3.6-liter V6 engine of 295 hp and 260-lb-ft of torque.

An option on the Limited, Trailhawk, Overland, and Summit versions is a 3.0-liter turbocharged diesel V6. This engine has 240 hp with 420 lb-ft of torque. The engine can tow up to 7,400 pounds. As of 2018, the Environmental Protection Agency has not given specific consumption ratings, but estimates suggest they will be the same as in 2017. Last year these numbers were 22 miles per gallon city/ 30 miles per gallon hwy/ 25 miles per gallon when combined with RWD and 21 miles per gallon city/ 28 miles per gallon hwy/ 24 miles per gallon when combined with AWD.

Another option is the 5.7-liter V8 that can output 360 hp and 390 lb-ft of torque. EPA rates this option at 14 miles per gallon city/ 22 miles per gallon hwy/ 17 miles per gallon combined for an engine that can tow 7,200 pounds.

The SRT has a 6.4-liter V8 that offers 475 hp and 470 lb-ft of torque. Gas mileage is 13 miles per gallon city/19 miles per gallon highway/15 miles per gallon combined.

Finally, the strongest of the bunch, the Trackhawk has a 6.2-liter V8 engine with 707 hp and 645 lb-ft of torque. Fuel consumption on this bad boy is 11 miles per gallon city/17 miles per gallon hwy/13 miles per gallon combined.

The 2018 Jeep Grand Cherokee offers many different trims and options to fit every individual’s style and price point.

Which New Jeep Grand Cherokee Should I Choose?

Although the Laredo is considered the base model, this vehicle is no slouch when it comes to design and features. The interior is outfitted with a lot of luxury materials and standard equipment includes keyless entry, rear parking sensors, front and back automatic climate control, a leather steering wheel, 7-inch touchscreen, 6-speaker stereo system with additional USB and audio inputs, 17-inch alloy wheels, backup camera, fog lights, heated side mirrors, and Bluetooth. The Laredo is also available as an AWD using the QuadTrac I system.

Choosing the Limited will earn the driver a cabin reminiscent of a luxury vehicle. The engine can optionally be upgraded to the 5.7-liter V8, and the QuadTrac II AWD system (optional) allows for greater off-road ability with its two-speed transfer case. Standard features include 18-inch alloy wheels, heated rear and front seats, heated steering wheel, a 9-speaker audio system with satellite radio, power liftgate, 8-way power-adjustable front seats with memory functions on the driver’s side, leather upholstery, and a 115-volt outlet.

The Overland is sold as an RWD vehicle but is available with QuadTrac II AWD. It has rain-sensing wipers, a sunroof, LED daytime running lights, an 8.4-inch touchscreen with navigation capabilities, cooled front seats, 20-inch wheels, xenon headlights, a power-adjustable steering wheel with wood trim, fog lights, and upgraded leather upholstery.

The Trailhawk is an AWD vehicle with Quadra-Drive II. It is designed specifically for off-road conditions and the advanced features make this Grand Cherokee as rough and tumble as they come.

The Summit uses the Quadra-Drive II as standard equipment, employing that electronic limited-slip differential. This luxury version has virtually every upgrade possible, including a raft of active safety features and a 19-speaker audio system.

The SRT uses standard AWD paired with a lowered suspension and a larger 6.4-liter V8. This trim might not be as off-road friendly as some of the other options, but for those who want to reach their destination in a hurry, this is the model to choose.

The top-of-the-line Trackhawk boasts suede and Nappa leather upholstery and 20-inch sports wheels with high-performance tires and hardware.

Most of the standard features in higher trim levels are available in the more economical versions, as well as additional options such as a towing package and a Blu-ray entertainment system. Cargo space with the rear seats folded is 68.3 cubic feet and 36.3 cubic feet behind the second row of seats. Two storage bins are included under the trunk floor.

Safety

The new Grand Cherokee’s safety features include anti-lock brakes and six airbags for driver and passenger safety. There is a rearview camera in all Limited edition trims and up. Blind spot monitoring and radar-based collision alert systems are also included technologies in the Grand Cherokee’s Limited trim and higher models.

In government crash tests the rear drive on the Cherokee scored superior scores of four out of five stars, and the vehicle received five stars for both its front and side protection in these tests, where it also received five stars for its greater rollover resistance in the AWD model.

When tested by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety, the Grand Cherokee performed so well it was given top ratings across the board except in tricky small overlap front crash tests. Here it was deemed marginal by the institute.

The New Jeep Grand Cherokee Experience

Drivers are reassured with nimble response and steady suspension when driving the Grand Cherokee on the road. It delivers confidence to the driver with its ability to absorb bumps quickly and confidently, without harshness to the ride.

The base V6 diesel model perform well during acceleration, however, the V8 engine will provide a superior all-out performance making it really fun to drive. The all-wheel drive (AWD) system installed is especially spectacular for high performance with its mix of grip and power.

The Trackhawk model increases your driving intensity to 11, mirroring the power of the Dodge Challenger/Charger Hellcat series. Not even BMW is making their X5 model with this type of power.
